Getting my first MEF certification

With my 1st writing to MEF ProCERT blog I tried share my very first experiences with MEF. That was more about how I used MEF technical specifications in the early stages of my career to help me out with planning, designing and architecting Metro Ethernet and Carrier Ethernet networks and also preparing RFPs for the same.

This blog is about my first experience with MEF Professional Certifications.

After 2 successful implementations of a Metro Ethernet Network and a Carrier Ethernet Network, I became more enthusiastic about the technology and the work of MEF. I started learning more and also contributing to the community. I also became an author and a senior contributor to the then Ethernet Academy.

In 2011 MEF introduced its 1st professional certification MEF-CECP (MEF Carrier Ethernet Certified Professional) and invited technical experts in the subject area to take the beta test. I volunteered and took the exam and with self-study, passed it from the 1st attempt becoming one of the 58 people in the world to become a MEF-CECP and also the 1st Sri Lankan to do so. I didn’t stop there. I encouraged my colleagues to do the exam and as a result 2 of them got the certification. Since then I volunteered for many MEF-CECP beta exams. In 2015, I got myself re-certified with MEF-CECP.

MEF-CECP gave me lot of confidence about my knowledge and it also gave great marketing value to me. As a result I received invitations to share my knowledge on Carrier Ethernet at many international conferences and that was later expanded to other areas as well. Some of them include;

  • Speaker at 40th Pacific Telecommunications Council 2018 (PTC'18), Honolulu (January 2018) Chair,
  • Speaker & Panelist at Broadband World Forum, Berlin (October 2017)
  • Speaker at 39th Pacific Telecommunications Council 2017 (PTC'17), Honolulu (January 2017)
  • Speaker & Panelist at Network Virtualization & SDN Asia 2016, Singapore (September 2016)
  • Speaker at Inaugural Network Virtualization & SDN MENA 2016, Dubai (May 2016)
  • Speaker & Panelist at Network Virtualization Forum Asia, Singapore (December 2015)
  • Panelist at Broadband World Forum, London (October 2015) Speaker at SDN & OpenFlow Asia-Pacific Congress, Singapore (May 2015)
  • Speaker & Panelist at VNF Management & Orchestration, Barcelona (April 2015)
  • Speaker & Panelist at Carrier Ethernet APAC, Singapore (December 2014)
  • Speaker & Panelist at Carrier Ethernet APAC, Singapore (December 2013)

I also attended MEF GEN14 as a panelist under the topic “Evolution of the Carrier Ethernet Professionals Community” together with few other MEF-CECPs. We shared our views on the MEF professional certification. I found MEF events to be highly professional with lot of things to learn. MEF16 was another event I attended and hope to be at MEF18 later this year.

MEF-CECP is my 1st vendor neutral certification experience and I found it to be really valuable and I’m sure the industry has also recognized its value. We see many organizations, especially operators, encouraging their staff to take the certifications as the technology evolves creating opportunities for everyone. MEF-CECP certification itself has also evolved from 2011, adding the essential ingredients to make it relevant to the changing market dynamics.
